Next Steps Transition Program – North Tipperary Traveller Youth Project
The Next Steps Transition Program is a pilot program funded by the Irish Youth Foundation. We are lucky to be one of thirteen projects across Ireland rolling it out. The aim of the program is to work with young people in sixth class through their transition to first year in secondary school. The program began in April and will continue until March 2017. We currently have 15 young people attending the program. There are two stages in the program, the primary section and the summer section. Both were a huge success with young people engaging in sessions that build character, team work and resilience. They have also participated in Snow White and the Seven Mental Health Helpers – a peer led positive mental health program. They have also engaged in fun activities such as the egg drop, creative baking, bingo and jewellery making. They also enjoyed a trip to Kilkenny Adventure Centre. The next step of the program is about to begin and will focus on practical supports to help young people to overcome any challenges they may face. This support will be provided on a weekly basis but also through their participation in other groups that the project provides.
